The Georges and Josephine Daou Scholarship for Outstanding Academic Achievement Tuesday 27 January 2009

The Lebanese National Network founder and president, space scientist Dr. Antoun Georges Daou, visited the Antonine Fathers College in Baabda as part of his yearly rounds on Lebanese schools and academic institutions. During his visit, Dr. Daou met with the school administration and assessed the progress of academic achievement and improvement in teaching techniques.
After meeting the academic staff and school teachers, Dr. Daou, together with his parents Mr. Georges Daou and Ms. Josephine Salameh, and in presence of Mr. Joseph Hajj Assaf, and Antonine provost Mr. Charles Kanaan, announced a yearly scholarship offered by his family. The 2009 recipient of the Georges and Josephine Daou Scholarship for Outstanding Academic Achievement is the 11th grade student Roua Abdallah Slim, who received her award together with a special certificate during Dr. Daou’s conference to secondary section classes.

The large audience conference Dr. Daou gave to the high school section was titled “From the Sun to the Stars”. During his talk, Dr. Daou exposed slides on the latest advances in space science, with a particular emphasis on the sun as a star and the new satellite missions used to image and better understand the stellar behavior and planet formation. He also talked about new innovations in robotics and mechanical engineering, showing examples on new robots designed to do the job of humans in dangerous scenarios in space. Dr. Daou intentionally insisted that the Lebanese students should place more emphasis on their education, ethics, and culture, and strive towards living a quality life away from the different mistakes and errors that our beloved country in sinking in. He particularly underlined the different problems that are slowly yet strongly changing and disintegrating a great part of the Lebanese society, and explained to the students that there are always ways to confront and defeat the decadence and evil currents that could stand in their way. When announcing the scholarship, Dr. Daou explained how, despite all the miseries that challenged Lebanon in the near history, many families courageously fought the social and political decadence, and worked hard to raise children that would keep carrying the country’s name in the highest purest atmosphere, above all the pollution of the evil deeds that are still disintegrating our society nowadays. He also gave the students a good patriotic boost and advised them never to forget who they are and where they come from, and to defend their national identity and work towards building better times, and being proud of their heritage, because the minute they forget their past, they will lose their future.

During his visit, the Antonine students also participated in the 2009 Lebanese National Network Scientific Competition. The Antonine Fathers College is part of more than 80 academic institutions nationwide that participate in the activities organized by SciLeb, the academic branch of the Lebanese National Network. The finalists in this competition will be interviewed and will possibly be admitted to the Leadership program organized by the network throughout their basic and advanced education years.

Through such visits and activities, the Lebanese National Network is placing high hopes that exposing the Lebanese society, especially our youth, to successful intellectuals such as Dr. Daou, would give them more motivation and courage to ameliorate their lives and have more faith in a peaceful and prosperous Lebanon. |
